After a busy winter we sometimes get a short break touring Iceland, from mid April until late May or early June. Not saying there is nothing going on at this time it’s just a little less busy and I personally welcome it. In April the winter is basically over and the Northern Lights season ends around mid April, but spring/summer is not quite there yet, so we are kind of caught between seasons. In June however things start to get interesting again. Everything turns green, the Alaska Lupine starts to grow and on huge fields it looks never ending, the Puffin has arrived and one of the greatest phenomenon of them all: The Midnight Sun!
The midnight sun is known everywhere around the Arctic Circle. You might wonder what I mean and basically it’s about having sunlight all night. The sun almost disappears at the horizon at sunset and then soon after starts to rise again. When its clear skies, or partly cloudy (which is better) we get this amazing light:sunset, twilight, sunrise for 5-6 hours!
I have travelled to a lot of places and experienced great light to shoot in, but in my personal opinion there is no better light to shoot in than the midnight sun in Iceland.
On a Midnight Sun Workshop we go out to shoot after dinner. Usually we are on location a little bit early to have the chance to scout the area properly, we might stop and shoot for a while on the way to the sunset spot, shoot until a little after sunset, and then move on to another location for the sunrise. Shooting continues past sunrise and we love every minute of it… afterwards we try to get as much sleep as possible, preferably sleeping until lunch time.
Then we drive to the next area and repeat!
Keep in mind that a Photo Workshop is NOT a relaxing vacation… it’s hard work battling the elements, chasing light and sometimes getting very little sleep. But the end goal is to get amazing photos and I do everything in my power to make sure everybody get what they came for and work for. All the assistance you need is provided.
